How Overturning Roe v Wade Will Impact Canadian Immigration
Here are three way the ban on abortions in the USA will impact Canadian Immigration.
More US citizens traveling to Canada for abortions. This of course is expected. US citizens do not need a visiting visa in order to enter Canada.
More US temporary residents traveling to Canada for abortion. We can expect an influx of American temporary residents and PRs seeking abortion services in Canada. Visitors looking to travel to Canada for a scheduled medical procedure are eligible to use the new TRV/SP portal. This is the same portal that expedites visitor visa applications for family and friends of Canadian citizens, PRs and temporary residents. Although the number of persons traveling to Canada for abortion services will likely not be significant, with a 2.4 million application backlog, any increase in applications will have negative consequences on an already overburdened system.
Far right political trends in America may have a ripple affects in Canada. American political trends inevitably affect Canadian political trends. This could potentially result in an increase of anti-immigration ideologies in Canada. Thankfully, we most likely won’t see anti-immigration redirect influence current policy - as the Liberal federal government continues to be largely regarded as a pro-immigration party.
We may however see the ripple affects at the federal court level. Since the Trump presidency, far right Canadian law-makers have come out of the woodwork. The overturning of Roe v. Wade only gives them more confidence to rule in the favour of far-right conservative values
I am so thankful we are here in Canada.
